OnlyVoice™ is Alango’s advanced user’s voice acquisition technology for headsets utilizing the combination of two Alango technologies; adaptive directional beamforming with two external microphones and internal (in ear) microphone processing. The combination of these two technologies allows for robust users’ voice pick-up even in a high noise or wind challenged environments. Hence, a person or a speech recognition system on the other end can hear and understand the user clearly.
OnlyVoice™ is the ideal technological approach in response to the growing trend of “short-boom” or “boom-less” headset designs. These designs may look stylish compared to a long boom, but, all things being equal, cannot compete with the voice intelligibility performance of a device with a long boom where the microphone is placed close to user’s mouth. In other words, there is a reason why a professional grade headset has a long boom – voice intelligibility. OnlyVoice™ allows a short-boom or boom-less headset to have the same level of voice intelligibility as a long-boom design.
One of the two Alango technologies used in OnlyVoice™ is Adaptive Dual Microphone (ADM) in the end-fire (far-talk) configuration. With two microphones on-axis pointing to the user’s mouth; ADM functions as an optimal directional microphone that attenuates signals arriving from the back and side directions while preserving the front signal. The sounds (signals and noises) are differentiated by the time of arrival for the two microphones depending on the direction.
Alango dual microphone technology is a state of the art voice enhancement technology significantly improving voice-to-noise signal ratio, however, like any technology, it has its limitations. Specifically, far field beamforming technologies are less efficient when noise and the user’s voice directions coincide. Very high noise levels are also challenging while exposure to wind is always a problem to external microphones. In these situations, is when an internal microphone may provide a breakthrough.
The second technology implemented in OnlyVoice™ is an in-ear microphone pickup and processing. Internal speech is transmitted from the user’s mouth via the Eustachian tube and captured by this internal microphone. This signal, since it is internal, is, relatively, isolated from the ambient external noise, and it is completely isolated from wind. As such, it can be efficient to communicate in environments where external microphones become unusable. Unfortunately, voice pickup by an internal microphone has its own limitations. First, its bandwidth is limited to approximately 1.5KHz. While it is possible to communicate with such a narrow bandwidth, user’s voice will sound very muffled and has, relatively, low intelligibility. Second, in-ear microphone requires complete sealing from the environment. Having even a small amount of leakage of the external ear will immediately fetch all the ambient noises.
Alango’s mixer algorithm intelligently combines the output of Adaptive Dual Microphone beamforming with the in-ear microphone. The combination depends on respective signal to noise ratios of the two outputs as well as the noise spectrum. When the conditions are good, and the user is in a quiet environment, the external dual microphone technology output is chosen. With the addition of ambient noises, the outputs of the external and internal microphones become mixed to achieve the best result. In extremely adverse conditions, when the external microphones cannot be used, the internal microphone output alone may be chosen.
Of course, the complimentary combination of the external beamforming microphones and internal microphone are combined with Alango’s echo cancellation, noise suppression, and gains management technologies to provide a complete solution for unparalleled voice clarity.
